A strong color collection balances brand expression with inventory reality. Too few colors can make a launch feel narrow; too many can divide demand across small SKUs, increase dye minimums and make reorders difficult.
There is no universal percentage for black, neutrals and accent colors. The correct mix should come from target customer, selling channel, climate, prior sales and brand position.
Build color roles
Core commercial colors
Black, deep navy, charcoal or brand-specific dark neutrals often support repeat demand and easy coordination. They should be selected because of customer evidence, not simply because every competitor sells them.
Earth, stone, brown, olive or muted tones can create identity while remaining wearable across tops, leggings, shorts and streetwear pants.
Seasonal accents
Brighter or emotional colors create novelty and campaign interest. They also carry greater forecasting risk and may be better used selectively.
Create outfit logic
A color should not be selected in isolation. Plan how sports bras, tanks, tops, leggings and shorts combine. Tonal sets may use different fabric constructions, so visual coordination must be approved on actual materials.
Consider operational limits
custom trim and elastic color minimums;
shade consistency across materials;
light-color opacity;
colorfastness requirements;
photography and e-commerce accuracy;
replenishment lead time;
leftover material.
Use evidence from test launches
Track sell-through, returns, size demand, customer comments and reorder speed by color. A social-media favorite may attract attention without becoming the strongest sales color.
A practical first-range approach
Choose dependable core colors.
Add a small number of recognizable brand neutrals.
Use accents on selected hero products.
